This picture was taken during the replacement of a large, heavy glass unit at Darwen Academy. The glass unit was part of a silicone bonded / capless curtain walling installation at the site. Glass units had aluminium carrier frames structurally bonded to their perimeters, which were then mechanically locked into the curtain walling grid, before a structural silicone bond is applied between the glass units.
As can be seen in the photo, specialist access equipment in the form of a spider crane, cherry picker, in additional to an electric vacuum lifting device had to be used for this project. The works were started and completed during the course of one day, including the application of sturual sealant to the newly installed glass unit.
